Since J. McCarthy, Ps’ slowly framed our perception of what marketing is. Sure experts and researchers will argue that the concept is now overcooked and has been greatly developped since, but the fact is that Ps’ remain the fundamental notion presented to newbies when introducing marketing… the one that everyone roughly knows, a filter used to discuss a company’s marketing strategy during cigarette’ breaks.
Well, for marketers though, latest trends are now to focus on societal needs to fuel a product (, service, brand, etc.) expansion. On the logical chain however, that concept doesn’t follow Ps’, but precedes it, leading to bias in manageurial decisions because other managers might take the chain from the Ps’ on. Simply said, when the marketing director proposes “product management”, other managers often agree for ”product marketing”. Result? a marketing strategy disconnected with the product.
Now why should we care about random companies’ manageurial flaws and subsequent lack of effectiveness??? because marketing dep. control ads, and nowadays, daily exposure to thousands of ads shift peoples’ perception. When messages differ from the product, words are slowly loosing sense. Now, if people start to question the reliability of words, what’s left to ground trust… in anything…
Damn… marketing education is now guarding limits of our collective sanity…
